Uniuyo Post UTME to
many students has remained a burden while to so many others who had gained
admission through this process, it is a blessing. The fear of Uniuyo post UTME, they say, is the
beginning of preparation. It will be ideal to remind ourselves how the idea of
Uniuyo post UTME examination, as it has come to be known, came to be.
In 2005, a young man
had enrolled to study medicine at the University of Uyo, Uyo with the distinction
of having scored highest in the university matriculation examination conducted
by the Joint Admissions Matriculation Board (JAMB).
To celebrate the
young man’s achievement, the school management had put together a small banquet
and for the school to know more about the student. While everybody was seated
including the rich parents of the brilliant student, and with the atmosphere so
joyful, the then vice chancellor, who was newly appointed, Professor Akanerim,
suddenly popped the question on the celebrated would-be student: “What is the
chemical formula of water?” Everyone in the gathering had expected the young
man to respond to the question but that was not the case. What happen to the
student afterwards? Your guess is as good as mine.
The management had to
generate a means to test the ability of other students who had chosen the
school in their UTME. The aftermath of the discovery was the consequent and
widespread discussion among scholars on quality evaluation and credibility of
results paraded by admission seekers.
As more institutions
followed the UNIUYO example, more revelations came to light to the effect that
often times, students with very high scores in JAMB’s examination failed to
replicate the same sterling academic performance; hence the need for the
adoption of a scrutinizing mechanism called UNIUYO post-UTME test.
Post UTME had
generated a lot of controversies among all sections of the population. While
some believe it is the best way to check the inability of JAMB to curb examination
malpractices others think it represents a means of exploitation by each school.
Virtually all higher
institutions in the country today conduct post UTME, ranging from federal,
state and private schools.
Uniuyo Post UTME has
no doubt changed the process of admission in the country; this allows the
various institutions to select the best out of the multitude. One thing that
needs to be done to sustain the integrity of the process, is that relevant
government authorities should regulate the amount being charged by various
institutions besides monitoring the exercise in various schools.
Is perturbing that
most schools in the country have turned the process into an avenue for revenue
generation though a few others have sustained the purpose for which the
examination was created, that is a true test of students’ credibility.
Examination
malpractices have done a lot of harm to our education system; parents, teachers
and school administrators are part of this dirty process; special and magic
centers have become common places.
In conclusion,
Education is key to both human and national development and for the country to
compete favorably in the league of world economies, the relevant authorities
and policy makers must all, as a matter of necessity, play their cards right.
